With more than 200 companies active in the life sciences sector and almost 40,000 employees, Belgium’s dynamism in the biotechnology and the pharmaceutical sectors is unquestionable. As regards Brussels, it boasts 49 companies active in R&D, production and services in the biopharma sector.
TomoDirect: new technology in breast cancer treatment

Breast cancer patients in the UZ Brussel will soon be treated with TomoDirect, a new treatment combining radiotherapy with an extremely precise imaging and dosimetry to prevent damage to healthy tissue. Physicist Truus Reynders of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel studied the clinical implementation of the TomoTherapy system and concluded that, in a number of cases, the new technology enables a better and more precise radiation dosimetry than traditional radiotherapy.
A better understanding of diabetes

In Europe, more than 30 million people are affected by diabetes mellitus. Approximately 80 % of the patients suffer from type 1 diabetes, then 15 % develop a type 2 diabetes. The key element of these two forms of diabetes is a decrease of beta cells mass, which is due to an increase of beta cells apoptosis. Cytokines IL-1 ß and IFN- ? contribute to the death of pancreatic ß cells in type 1 diabetes.
UCL, pioneer in nanomicrobiology

By marrying nanotechnologies and microbiology, researchers from UCL succeeded for the first time in observing the molecular organization of the cell wall of alive bacteria.
A major stake in microbiology research is to better understand how the elementary bricks of the bacterial cell wall get assembled and organized.
